Hello.
Welcome to this little piece of the Internet, a window into my adventures in the world of films and filmmaking.
Picture making is something that dates back to my earliest childhood memories. I can recall sitting in the corner of the lounge watching Hollywood adventure movies on my parents’ 14” portable. At the same time I was developing a fascination with this device that you could point at a subject and click, and then days later it would be magically realised on shiny sheets of paper. In my early teens, I was introduced to the school darkroom and the magician’s secrets were revealed to me. To this day those photochemical processes still feel like magic to me. I subsequently persuaded my parents that I needed an SLR and off I went, not really knowing what I was doing, shooting rolls and rolls of B&W film.
As much as I loved shooting stills I was becoming increasingly interested in making those images move and emulating the motion picture storytelling of my heroes. So, with a few likeminded cohorts we set about trying to make those pictures move, again not really knowing what we were doing. Irrespective of the quality of those early forays, I had well and truly caught the bug and - no matter what else I did with my life - I knew I would always have the itch to make movies.
In time, this itch led me to film school where I studied cinematography and editing. It was a whole new experience being around other eager and passionate filmmakers on a full time basis and really cemented my understanding of filmmaking as an art of collaboration and communication, as much as anything else. The microcosm of the film school environment would also form my first real introduction to the practical, political and personal challenges of the filmmaking world.
Film school led to great collaborations with some wonderful and very talented people in the following years - shooting music videos and short films and, in many cases, cutting them also.
In recent years I moved to New Zealand and from here I invite you to join me on the continuation of this journey. I will strive to keep this site up to date with the highs and lows of this adventure. I will share what I can and I hope you will too, so please comment on my blog, follow me on Twitter or leave me a message via the website.
Cheers,
Ross
